Ideas:
“  I am currently working on the relationship between religion and capitalism. I have recently published a book with Routledge "Capitalism and Religion in World History: Purification and Progress" in which - defining capitalism as capital mobility bolstered by credit creation, and religion as purification bolstered by faith - I show capitalism emerged in two forms: Merchant Capitalism under Islam; and Technological Capitalism in Western Europe. I go on to demonstrate that religious nationalism in the modern world is fully consistent with merchant capitalism but not with technological capitalism. In countries where technological capitalism is stifled by religious ideology, technological progress is hampered, leading to stagnation in per capita income growth. As a result many countries fall into religion traps, fomenting terrorism and in some cases civil wars where religious creeds contest with each other. In more recent work I discuss why secularism grew in late Medieval Europe.  ”
