Ideas:
“  The Quest for Land and Food in Early Colonial Virginia: Turbulent changes in English property law and economic conditions led many hungry and impoverished English people (at first all men) to undertake a lengthy and risky voyage to North America. They were motivated by a quest for food and stability, a quest that could be fulfilled by land ownership. The lucky minority who survived death and starvation and were able to acquire land could not grow all the food they needed. Without the grocery stores with which they were familiar back across the seas, they found ways to trade and purchase the food they couldn't grow themselves. The need to acquire food they couldn't grow themselves prompted merchants to establish shops and markets in the new world, and these shops and markets evolved to the American grocery store and ultimately the American supermarket.  ”
