Ideas:
“  I am working on a manuscript: The Mask Wars: How a Fabric Shaped a Nation. Section 1, “The Mask as Tool,” addresses arguments about the usefulness of masking to combat COVID 19. Section II, “The Symbolic Power of the Mask,” places the conflict over mask mandates in comparative historical context by looking at instances – anti-Klan mask bans, and campaigns against the face veil in Europe and the Soviet Union – in which masking (or showing one’s face) became a symbol of a broader social project. Section III, “Sharing the Burden of Masking,” examines how informal norms of mask wearing have developed over the past year. Finally, Section IV, “The Future of the Mask Wars,” focuses on the rise of vaccines, and the experience of masking in twentieth century East Asia, to examine what masking will look like in a post pandemic age.  ”
