This paper provides a snapshot of the manufacturing sector in WA, focusing on the degree of transformation in the industry, export orientation, investment and research and development. Section 2 of this paper provides a brief overview of the WA manufacturing sector, in terms of both output and employment and on a compositional basis, and compares value adding in the sector with Australian averages. Section 3 outlines the critical role of exports in the sector, and how they have changed, in terms of both dollar value, and the degree of transformation they represent. Section 4 provides some guide to the future of manufacturing in WA, based on current investment and research and development expenditure. Section 5 presents some brief conclusions.
