Abstract

"This research note categorizes medical services provided by acute care hospital according to their relative profitability (i.e., relatively profitable, relatively unprofitable, or variably profitable). The categorization is based on interviews with relevant experts as well as reviews of published research, policy reports, trade journals, and popular press. The different methods of characterizing services yield similar results."
