Abstract

Of all central and eastern European countries, Romania is considered to be the one which enjoys the richest and most varied natural and antropic touristic resources, and this aspect confers a great potential for the development of tourism. The economical, social, and political context of the period after 1990 was not one to contribute to the development of the Romanian tourist field. Moreover, according to the conclusions of specialists in this field, the transition effects of market economy determined that tourism, besides other fields of economy, should be recorded as a regress.

The present paper is in fact - in the first part - a Romanian tourism diagnose after 1990, based on plenty of studies and researches made on tourism activity. In the last part, a perspective for tourism evolution is designed. Thus, the policy for tourist improvement must be in accordance with the constant effort at the national level, so that tourism should not only become a major component of the national economy, but also a strategy of rehabilitation for Romania's image abroad.
