Abstract

I describe how ICT is essential for developing a nation economically, how ICT contributes to social and political development, and the essential regulatory policies for telecommunications development, including competition, strong regulatory institutions, and competitive safeguards. Studies demonstrate that ICT contributes to economic growth for both developed and developing countries through stimulated investment, improved productivity, and enabling new business. Competition consistently improves telecommunications development, but even more so when coupled with a strong, independent regulatory commission that facilitates market forces.
