Abstract

This discussion paper, presented in response to an address to the Centre for Criminal Justice and Human Rights (University College Cork) by Dean John D. Hutson, aims to highlight the role that law and lawyers play in bolstering the U.S. Administration's desired legal interpretations, which in turn legitimate their desired actions even in clear contravention of international law (including jus cogens). The very short discussion document considers this in relation to three categories of lawyering - government lawyering, academic lawyering, and court-based practice.

This discussion paper was presented at a seminar in the Centre for Criminal Justice and Human Rights, Faculty & Department of Law, University College Cork, Ireland on 23 April 2008.
