Abstract

Central Kalimantan and East Kalimantan provide contrasting case studies that demonstrate, each in their own way, the need to 'disaggregate' our view of the Indonesian state. In Central Kalimantan, the centre stood by while local elites plunged the province into a frenzy of ethnic cleansing. In wealthy East Kalimantan, local elites largely resisted the temptations of ethnic mobilisation and enjoyed the benefits of regional autonomy.

Keywords: Indonesia, Kalimantan, Borneo, Dayaks, ethnicity, state, regional autonomy
