Abstract

We present the surgical activity of 50th Romanian Field Hospital, during UNOSOM II mission In Somalia 1993-1994. The mission was profoundly humanitarian, being the first across borders campaign for a Romanian hospital. The hospital structure included 3 sections (surgery, intensive care, internal medicine) and a triage unit with ambulatory of various medical specialties. Mostly the medical activity was for the Somali civil population and also for military and civilian members of UNOSOM II mission. Between 1993-1994, 1118 patients were admitted in Romanian Hospital, with 781 patients in surgical department and 356 war casualties. The treatment was biphasic, first resuscitation and secondly surgical treatment. The overall mortality was 7.81%.
