Abstract

This paper celebrates the accomplishments of Sadie American, Chicago's pioneer of visual sociology. While much has been written about her tireless efforts to support immigrant causes in Chicago and New York City, relatively little is known about her career as a sociologist and pioneer of the sociological sub-specialty called visual sociology. This paper examines her sociological work and how it was shaped by her identity as an immigrant, a Jew, and a woman.

Keywords: history of visual sociology, immigrants in Chicago, Jewish sociology
