Abstract

Interorganizational trust is an important factor affecting the actions and performance of organizations engaged in strategic alliances and in other dyadic and network relationships. In this article, we examine and consolidate the empirical scholarship on interorganizational trust in the management literature, grouping the findings into a staged model of interorganizational trust identifying four key themes that have been explored in the literature. These themes address the following questions with respect to interorganizational trust: What is it? How is it created? How does it work? What does it lead to? An analysis of these streams of inquiry reveals a number of interesting potential areas for further research, such as costs of trust creation, trust and networks, and asymmetry of trust. The directions for future research form a rich and varied research agenda for scholars of interorganizational trust.
