Abstract

After being one of the lowest-performing schools in the entire school district, can a school look to its leader to institute change? Paula Frazier, principal of Pleasant Valley Elementary School, shares her experience as a school turnaround specialist through this descriptive case. Frazier's action plan is laid out for students to analyze, suggest alternatives to, and incorporate into their own experiences. The presentation of her leadership style offers an opportunity to discuss leader attributes.

PLEASANT VALLEY ELEMENTARY SCHOOL:

CELEBRATING SUCCESS ONE STUDENT AT A TIME

We have to create the instructional strategies that will work with every child. We have a team at Pleasant Valley that works together with individual students, because every child is so different. Children have different personalities, different backgrounds, and different life experiences. We look at their performance—academically, socially, emotionally—and we develop a plan to help each child succeed in whatever way possible.

—Pleasant Valley Elementary Principal Paula Frazier

At the start of the 2005–06 school year, Pleasant Valley was the top-performing elementary school in the Rockingham County Public School District. Principals from around the county visited Pleasant Valley to discuss teaching strategies and curriculum models, and the superintendent asked the school's third-grade teaching team to present its successful methods to elementary teachers across the district.
