A series of events have led to a confrontation between Chris Kerns, manager of Engineering, and Shannon Allen, one of Kerns's direct reports. Before Kerns will discuss future possibilities, Allen must "apologize for the past, relieve concerns about truthfulness, and affirm commitment." This case must be used with its companion case "Monitor Technology: Shannon Allen" (UVA-QA-0570).

Monitor Technology: Chris Kerns

Enough is enough. This weekend's fiasco is the final straw! Shannon again failed to live up to a personal commitment and, this time, disrupted the entire production department's weekend as well. Shannon's reluctance to be a team player has really worn thin—the secret to success in a small company like ours is to have everyone's oar in the water. I'm not sure if Shannon's oar is here or somewhere else. Integrity is an even more important issue. This morning's excuse for the weekend debacle was that a relative in a neighboring state needed immediate attention and that Shannon spent the weekend attending to her. My reaction was a rather cold, “I'm sorry, we'll have to talk at eleven o'clock.” Wouldn't common courtesy have suggested a phone call so we could wave off the production team? When we meet, Shannon is going to have to apologize for the past, relieve my concerns about truthfulness, and affirm a commitment to helping MT meet its goals. Only then can we begin to talk about the future.
