Abstract

In evaluating the success of ebook publishing, it is instructive to distinguish between two "types" of books: immersive (books one tends to read cover-to-cover) and extractive (books one tends to use as reference). Initial forays in online publishing focused on immersive books and were largely unsuccessful. Meanwhile, extractive books have proved well-fitted for electronic publication. In this paper, I evaluate representative ebook efforts within the context of this distinction. Building on this analysis, I extrapolate the evolution of this immersive/extractive ebook front.
