Abstract We consider that the factors defining the local environment have impact on the economic growth and determine the existence of the regional disparities. To verify this hypothesis, we analyse, using the PCA method and the 3 Sigma rule, a set of variables for the 42 Romanian counties. The results obtained allow us to highlight the spatial distribution of the growth factors and the explanation of the regional disparities. The information obtained is useful for the foundation of the regional development strategies.
