Abstract

Russia is a major player in global energy markets. It is today the only country that is a major exporter of all the three hydrocarbons. Having lost its status as a superpower with the dissolution of the former Soviet Union in 1991, Russia aspires to emerge as an energy superpower so it may be able to flex its muscles on the international scene. Its aspiration is underpinned by what is believed to be vast proven reserves of oil and natural gas, competition for dwindling global oil reserves and Europe's dependence on Russian gas exports. However, Russia may find it extremely difficult, if not impossible, to become an energy superpower. Instead, energy supplies could prove to be Russia's Achilles' heel.
