Abstract
Programmatic Educational R&D is defined as "sustained, cumulative, analytic, and empirical inquiry addressing matters of significant importance to the education profession and its constituent publics, with organizational effort of sufficient scale and duration to have identifiable effects that are regarded as beneficial by the profession and its publics."
The paper traces the history of the endeavor to date and points to future benefits.
