Abstract

This brief essay draws upon the author's research, reported in his forthcoming book, Legal Advocacy: Lawyers and Nonlawyers at Work (Ann Arbor: University of Michigan Press, 1998), systematically comparing lawyer and nonlawyer advocates. He argues that the performance of advocates does not support continued limitations on the use of nonlawyers as advocates; he suggests several possible mechanisms for regulating nonlawyers that would protect the public while also giving the public alternatives to representation by licensed attorneys.
