Abstract

Rapid economic progress has resulted in the formation of pockets of growth which are acting as attractor of economic activities. This is causing huge rural-urban migration thus causing greater economic disparity between urban & rural areas and socio-economic problems in the urban areas themselves. The situation is worsening and the authorities urgently need to mitigate this problem. The article elucidates the current bleak situation and then focuses on establishing the private sector as the engine of pro-poor growth. Few broad level objectives are laid down as a guiding principal for the market development of rural areas. The article then provides a comprehensive framework, with real life examples, which is a synthesis of Value Chain Analysis and Corporate Strategic Management Theory. The framework can be used by the Government and Donor Communities alike for Market Development of rural areas
