Abstract

The State of Israel was born with two international birth certificates, both of which describe a future national home, or a Jewish State, for the Jewish people. The League of Nations codified the international commitment to a Jewish state in 1922, and the United Nations reaffirmed this position in 1947 with the partition plan.

The 1947 partition now seems like ancient history. It is rarely referred to in the context of the Arab-Israeli conflict. This lack of interest in the partition plan does not reduce the importance of the document. What exactly did the international community decide?

Keywords: Israel, democracy
