Abstract

This case depicts many of the major events that have come to define the unique life and contributions of Michael Rubens Bloomberg. Born into a working-class family, Bloomberg demonstrated throughout his life the importance of hard work. His success in Scouting—becoming one of the youngest to earn his Eagle Scout Award—to his success at Salomon Brothers, and then in the creation of his own firm, illustrated his unique skills and abilities. Bloomberg applied his creative and courageous style to leading New York City as its mayor. Following Rudolph W. Giuliani was not easy, and yet within months, Bloomberg had made a clear positive impact on the city. The case ends with his second term and the big question of "What's next?"

MICHAEL RUBENS BLOOMBERG

No one knows why, in his autobiography, Michael Rubens Bloomberg called Medford, Massachusetts, his birthplace. Fortunately, his mother, Charlotte, called the New York Times to set the record straight after she heard of an article that incorrectly cited Medford as her son's birthplace. Mrs. Bloomberg told the New York Times, “He was born at St. Elizabeth's Hospital on Cambridge Street in Brighton. He was not born in Medford.” Bloomberg was proud of his working-class roots, as was his mother, who, according to her son, would sometimes deny she was related to him to avoid a conversation.
