Abstract
Patents grant a limited monopoly to inventors as an incentive to spur and disseminate useful innovations. This note outlines the conditions under which patents are granted and the procedures for obtaining patents. The various roles that patents play in business strategy are also explored, including licensing and the formation of strategic alliances.
