Abstract

The article provides a brief assessment of the legal arguments that have been advanced in support of the US-led military intervention in Iraq in 2003. It concludes that the intervention is illegal under existing international law. It is neither validly based on Security Council authorization, nor can a justification be found in the law of self-defence or the notion of “humanitarian intervention.”

Keywords: Iraq, USA, military intervention, UN, Security Council
