Abstract

At the end of the 20th century, the American two-party system appeared to be in danger. In both 1992 and 2000, the presence a minor-party presidential candidate changed the outcome from what it would have been in a strict two-party contest. Three consecutive elections, 1992-2000, saw no majority of the popular vote.2 Many students of the US party system, including me, thought there was a serious possibility that one or both of the major parties would collapse or split, leading to the rise of a new, more representative party system.
