Abstract

In this paper, I attempt to contribute to the ongoing discussion of the interactions among religion, law, and identity by focusing on children and education. By drawing on selected defining moments in the broad constitutional self-understandings of Canada and the United States, whether embodied in Supreme Court cases or loudly broadcast public debates, I hope to illustrate the ways in which communities and their members are conceived, constructed, and recognized.
