Abstract
At the end of the nineteenth century, while many regions of Colombia faced the constant internal strife, the nation discussed the need for profound changes in the organization and financing of the education system. At the time, the governors promoted insightful educational reforms following political orientation, prevailing in the period an education to serve the economy. The linkages between national policy and its impact on the educational system are shown in the article, as well as the reasons which explain the decline of the educational system in the country in the period.
