Abstract

This chapter provides a broad perspective on the regulation and politics of pharmaceuticals in Australia since the 1950s. Three policy phases are identified: state dominance and decommodification (1951–1987), pluralist bargaining (1987–1996), and (since 1996) the uneven inroad of neoliberalism. The purpose is not to assign great importance to these dates but to render visible key dynamics and significant policy shifts.

Keywords: Australia, pharmaceutical policy, regulation, Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme
