Aquaculture, the farming of aquatic organisms in marine or freshwater, has been labeled the Blue Revolution. It represents one of mankind’s biggest hopes for generating affordable protein for an ever-increasing population. By virtue of a location advantage (marine environments, proximity to the EU and special trade relationships with the EU), the member states of the Economic Community of Western African States (ECOWAS) may enjoy a competitive advantage in the development of small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs) that focus on mariculture, aquaculture and environmentally friendly polyculture farms.
