Abstract

Recent theoretical debates on internationalization and its general application to large firms are considered, and a case study of Italian small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) as participants in the internationalization process is offered. Among small firms in Southern Italy, export is still the most widespread form of internationalization. This empirical study of the relationship between export activity, competitive strategy, and the demand for services in SMEs, considers behavioral, competitive, structural and performance variables. The sample analyzed consists of 136 small export firms in Southern Italy. A positive relationship between a firm's international performance, its competitive strategies, and the demand for services is recommended. The importance of acquiring internationalization services in a firm's strategic planning is signaled, so that its international competitiveness may be improved. Increased exports should be supported by an entrepreneurial culture open to learning and change, and increased exports should make firms change their competitive strategies (price vs. quality) and shift the demand for support services (standardized vs. customized).(CBS)
