Abstract

Surveys completed by legal aid staff for domestic violence clients and compiled from police domestic calls highlight the unique experiences of overseas born women who are trapped in violent or abusive relationships. Easteal suggests ways to improve the plight of immigrant women. She argues that policies and practices that are constructed without an understanding of what it means to be a migrant and a battered woman only add to the victimisation of these women.

Keywords: legal aid, domestic violence, immigrant women
