This document (compiled by Erhard, Jensen and Granger) is the first, second and third of six pre-course reading assignments for an experimental leadership course ("Being A Leader and The Effective Exercise Of Leadership: An Ontological Model") developed by the authors at the U. Rochester Simon School of Business 2004-2008. (This course is taught at the U.S. Air Force Academy, and a version of which is taught at the U. of Rochester Simon School of Business and the Erasmus Law School, Rotterdam, NL, and was taught by us at Erasmus Academie in Rotterdam in 2009, the Mays School of Business, Texas A&M, College Station, TX, June, 2010, and Asia Plateau at Panchgani, India, Nov. 2010).
The intention of the course is to leave participants actually being leaders and exercising leadership effectively, and for the course to contribute to creating a new science of leadership. The course is founded on what we term an ontological/phenomenological model of human nature.
The first of the three pre-course reading assignments in this document primarily contains quotes selected from Warren Bennis & Robert Thomas, "Crucibles of Leadership" (2002), and most of Chapter 2 from Bill George, "Authentic Leadership:" (2003), regarding “crucibles,” with commentary by us.
Following the first reading assignment in this document, you will find the second and third of the six pre-course reading assignments. The second reading assignment primarily contains quotes selected from Carol Dweck, "Mindset: The New Psychology of Success" (2006), regarding the contrast between “fixed and growth mindsets”, with commentary by us. And the third reading assignment is “Education as Stretching the Mind" by Jamshed Bharucha (2008).
