Abstract

The emergence, development, growth and decline of cities is rooted in the history of time that is changed by it. In urban areas of Santander, Boyacá, Nariño and Arauca, still echo the old foundations of cities: characteristics of sacred sites, insurance and assets. This was true during the colonial formation (1900-1740) or during the viceroyalty (1740-1810) or during the slow break with the colonial past (1810 to 1850). The cities then became confused as small knots on a vast web of green mountains and ridges. As surely as the twentieth century became the first in history in which most of Colombia's population lives in cities.
