It's Time for Faculty to Coopt Assessment

With persistent public criticism and declining economic health, public higher education will continue to face the types of external threats that generated the initial demands for assessment in the 1980s. It is the contention of this author that how higher education responds to current external threats will affect its future. This paper represents an attempt to explain and understand the responses of higher education to external threats through an application of Philip Selznick’s (1966) concept of cooptation.
