Abstract

The Penn State Workforce Education and Development Initiative conducted an analysis of the economic impact of the nursing and residential care facilities industry in Potter and Tioga counties. The analysis was designed to help understand the impact of layoffs as a result of the closing of the Northern Tier Facility, owned by Adelphoi Village of Latrobe, Pennsylvania, that, according to press reports, will occur on April 9, 2010.

Adelphoi Village is a provider of youth and family care services with estimated annual sales of $15 million. The company has over 600 employees working in 35 counties throughout Pennsylvania, West Virginia, and Delaware. The Northern Tier Facility, located in Potter County, employs 70 workers. No reason was specified for the closing.

Services provided by Adelphoi Village are classified in North American Industrial Classification System code 623-nursing and residential care facilities. According to the U.S. Bureau of the Census, establishments in this industry "provide residential care combined with either nursing, supervisory, or other types of care as required by the residents."
