Abstract

The term ‘a practice in search of a theory’ has attracted authors writing about mediation and alternative dispute resolution (ADR) in general. An underpinning theory of professional practice consultancy in mediation (PPC, otherwise known as supervision) has yet to be articulated. Current consultancy training and practices are based on concepts derived from other disciplines, such as counselling and social work; however, these are inappropriate for the specific ethos and challenges of mediation. This paper argues for a discrete theoretical professional practice consultancy model, and explores a route by which this might be identified and achieved.

Keywords: mediator, mediation, professional practice consultancy, supervision, theory
