Abstract

"King Lear" is well described when described as turning on the meaning of the Fourth Commandment as the Small Catechism of Luther (1529) set forth. The Fourth Commandment being not only about the state, but about parents, and our relationship to them. Text evidence from the play, from the first act, supports this reading quite well.
