Abstract

Teams are everywhere in economic life. Yet teamwork might take different forms: real teamwork on the one hand and additive teamwork on the other. With an appropriately designed real-effort experiment, we are the first to show that an individual’s sorting decision between working individually or working on a team crucially and positively depends on the presence of complementarities as offered by real teamwork.
