Abstract

This is an encyclopedia entry, written with Rex Martin, intended to introduce readers to liberalism. After a brief introduction, the entry is organized around the distinction between variants of the sort of liberalism associated with J.S. Mill, T.H. Green, L.T. Hobhouse, John Dewey, John Rawls, Ronald Dworkin, and Joseph Raz, on the one hand, and the older liberal tradition associated with John Locke and a more laissez-faire orientation toward economic institutions and carried forward in different ways by Robert Nozick, David Gauthier and Loren Lomasky.

Keywords: liberalism
