Abstract

This research examines possible effects of climatic change focusing on global warming and its impacts on three villages from Tuticorin District and suggests measures to mitigate climate change. The general objective of this research is to expand understanding of three villages from Tuticorin District viz, Therespuram, Ettayapuram and Puthukkottai peoples’ experience of climate variability and responses made to overcome impacts of climate change.

Specific objectives of the present study are:

1. To collect data on the socio-economic structure and activities of the respondents in three villages from Tuticorin District viz, Therespuram, Ettayapuram and Puthukkottai.

2. To understand the local peoples’ awareness towards climate variability.

3. To find out the major impacts of changing climate in local peoples’ view.

The study was conducted in Tuticorin District of Tamilnadu. This study is compiled with the help of the primary data covered only three months period (2010). The primary data was collected with the help of specially prepared interview schedule. In this research, total of 364 interviewees were selected in three villages from Tuticorin District. This is purely a descriptive study. A list of simple questions was prepared prior to the actual fieldwork. In-depth Interviews was conducted by making transect walk to gather the household information, attitude of local peoples‘ toward climate change, their knowledge and experiences regarding climate variability, impacts and adapting activities. The data has been presented in the form of tables for easy understanding and analysis. Secondary data was collected through journals, articles, thesis, reports, publications, web sites. Commensurate with the set objectives various analytical tools were employed for the analysis and interpretation of the data.
