Abstract

Plato describes a world of Ideals, and suggests that our own world contains just shadows of these perfect forms. The contention of this paper is that the remuneration committee as envisaged by regulation is an unattainable Platonic Ideal. Interview-based research with the remuneration-setting protagonists in a selection of FTSE 350 companies illustrates how these ideals are translated into practice and shows the realities behind the rhetoric.
