Abstract
On the basis of archival research the author documents the origins of the first American treatise on consular law by David B. Warden (1772-1845), the United States Consul at Paris, the impact of Russian international legal doctrine on the treatise, and the influence of the treatise on the formation of American legislation and practice regulating consular relations.
