Abstract

The paper examines the uses political philosopher Eric Voegelin made of the term "leap in being" in his philosophy of history. How does this term differ from equivalent formulations, such as "breakthrough" and "differentiation? Are there "leaps in being" outside "Western" civilization?

Keywords: Leap, Ontology, Cosmos, Consciousness, Primary Experience, Mysticism
