Abstract
The erratic development of electronic wallets (EW) shows the difficulties of their adoption by the general public and shopkeepers. With the exception of Proton in Europe and Octopus in Asia, a lot of electronic wallets are likely to disappear in the next years. Yet, the key factors of success are known by banks which often didn’t take care about them. The new strategic change taken by some to start again EWs like Monéo could however reverse the tendency. However, it will be necessary to still wait several years before seeing electronic wallets really imposing themselves like a credible alternative to payments in cash.
