Abstract
Opportunity recognition (OpR) is a central concept in the field of entrepreneurship. Fundamental questions related to OpR were investigated by the Panel Study of Entrepreneurial Dynamics (PSED). Drawing on the PSED data, this paper addresses several questions that have been proposed in prior research. These include whether OpR is externally or internally stimulated, the number of ideas nascent entrepreneurs considered before choosing one, sources of entrepreneurial opportunities, and the extent to which the OpR process was either systematic or "accidental." Ordered logit analysis were used to investigate why entrepreneurs pursue opportunities.
