In this Op Ed, I argue that the Belgian negotiators in the enduring institutional and political conflict would benefit from essential insights of negotiation theory such as moving from position to underlying interests, and demonstrating empathy for the other side to create a renewed trust and respect. The zero sum attitude should be replaced by a problem solving and collaborative approach.
