Abstract

In recent decades, the employment and welfare conditions of players in top level sport in Australia and New Zealand have progressed from below to well above community standards in many instances. This paper provides information about employment and welfare conditions across 12 sports and identifies how progress has been achieved outside the usual industrial relations and legislative frameworks, with special attention to the emergence and role of player associations.
