Abstract

This story is about sport and Florida basketball in particular, intertwined with politics. Sport is a social and cultural institution. Every evening we seat ourselves in front of the television, glancing at the headlines in the newspaper and then turn quickly to the sports page. We read, discuss, view and even vociferously argue sport in America. We perform our jobs in a perfunctory manner, but when it comes time for sports our enthusiasm reaches a fervor level. Here comes the NBA Finals, Wimbledon, World Series, Super Bowl and more. Even those from age eight to age eighty, who have limited athletic skills, can now talk a good game. Participation in sports not only builds character, it reveals character.
