Abstract

The present article is an attempt to offer two different reading to one of the most interesting literay and philosophical productions of the 18th Phanariot century, the moral treaty “On Duties”. From among Nicolae Mavrocordat’s works, the moral treaty “On Duties” (“Peri ton katikonton biblos”) is considered by researchers as the most significant and one of the most elaborate of the prince’s writings in which the reader will find the influence of the numerous volumes read by its erudite author. It’s precisely these influences which allow two different kinds of interpretation: on the one hand that of a treaty on Christian morality and on the other hand an apology of enlightened absolutism.
