Abstract
This paper examines a group of 2003 journalistic narratives in which Leo Strauss was presented as the secret mastermind behind the invasions of Iraq and Afghanistan. Rather than address the veracity of those claims, it asks what role for Strauss and the "Straussians" these conspiracy theorists imagined - and what this means for conceptions of public intellectual culture in early 21st-century America.
